Individual Art Therapy & Counseling

in Franklin, TN

Anyone can participate in art therapy. There are no age, gender, or experience requirements. If you haven’t touched art materials since grade school, you are welcome here!

Art therapy is a great way to improve self-worth, explore mindfulness, process emotions, and heal our inner child. My hope is to show you that you can:

  • build the skills you need to cope with challenging emotions

  • trust yourself to set healthy boundaries and honor your needs

  • nurture your sensitivity and even find ways to celebrate it

Art Therapy Meeting Options

  • Meet me at a public park in Brentwood, TN (specific location disclosed in consultation). In the outdoor space, we’re able to talk, make art, and walk if appropriate. I’ll bring my outdoor blanket and art supplies for you to use. You’re welcome to bring water and a snack!

  • You may choose to meet for art therapy in my office space in Franklin, TN (available on Mondays only). We’ll have a cozy, private space to talk and create art together, as we work toward your goals.

In-person art therapy will be available starting May 2024.

  • Virtual sessions are available to anyone in Tennessee and Vermont. All you need is a private space, a device for the video call, and a small number of art supplies. This is a great option if you’re outside of the Franklin, TN area, cannot drive, or your schedule doesn’t allow for you to spend the additional time driving to our sessions.

What to Expect in an Art Therapy Session

Each session will vary a bit, but typically an art therapy session consists of a check-in, time for art making, and time for processing/discussing. The type of art you’re actually making will depend on your goals, needs, interests, and time.

There is no need for any artistic skill! You’re welcome to participate in art therapy regardless of your art experience.

The standard sessions length is 50 minutes. However, if we find that we need longer sessions, I offer 75-minute and 90-minute sessions.

Art Supplies

How we approach art supplies will differ depending on where and how we’re meeting. If we’re meeting in-person, either outdoors or in my office, I will provide art supplies. If we’re meeting virtually, you will need to bring materials to sessions.

For virtual sessions, I typically recommend that you acquire at least 2-4 supplies from the following list: pencil/pen, colored pencils, crayons, markers, watercolor or acrylic paint, oil pastels, a sketchbook for mixed media (this paper allows for paint and glue without bleeding through), magazines for collage, scissors, and glue. If you have a favorite art material(s), you are encouraged to use that, too! Having a small variety of materials means that we can intuitively shift the type of art making depending on what’s coming up in the session.

If you’re newer to art making and don’t have supplies already, no worries. You have a few options. You can explore craft stores, thrift stores, and ask friends/family for any supplies they may have laying around. We will talk about supplies in more detail during our consultation and first session.
